The First Percutaneous Thyroid Nodule Ablation in Tamil Nadu

The first thyroid ablation in Tamil Nadu marked a transformative moment in the field of thyroid care. This landmark procedure was successfully performed in October 2019 at JJ Interventional Radiology Endovascular Centre (JJIREVC), introducing a minimally invasive, non-surgical approach for treating thyroid nodules in the state. Until this advancement, surgery remained the primary option for most patients with thyroid nodules. Thyroid ablation changed this paradigm by offering a safer, scar-free alternative with faster recovery.

This achievement represented the beginning of a new era in image-guided thyroid treatment in Tamil Nadu.

The first percutaneous thyroid nodule ablation in Tamil Nadu was led by experienced interventional radiologists Dr. Kamala Retnam and Dr. Mohnish Palanisamy. Their expertise in interventional radiology and ultrasound-guided procedures played a critical role in the successful execution of this pioneering treatment.

Their leadership and technical precision established JJIREVC as a centre known for innovation and excellence in minimally invasive thyroid care.

The first thyroid ablation in Tamil Nadu was carried out using a percutaneous, ultrasound-guided technique. Instead of open surgery, a thin probe was inserted directly into the thyroid nodule under real-time imaging guidance. Controlled thermal energy was applied to destroy abnormal tissue while preserving surrounding healthy thyroid structures.

This approach eliminated the need for surgical incision and general anesthesia. Patients benefited from same-day discharge, minimal discomfort, faster recovery, and excellent cosmetic outcomes, proving the effectiveness of non-surgical thyroid intervention.

The clinical outcomes and follow-up results of the first thyroid ablation in Tamil Nadu were published as a pilot study in the Indian Association of Endocrine Surgeons Newsletter (September 2020). This publication formally recognized the procedure as a significant milestone in the advancement of thyroid ablation techniques in India.

Even today, the impact of the first thyroid ablation in Tamil Nadu continues to influence thyroid care. It has encouraged wider adoption of minimally invasive thyroid treatments, reduced dependence on surgery, and improved patient confidence in non-surgical options. This breakthrough laid the foundation for safer thyroid treatments, reduced complications, and better quality of life for patients across the region.
